Payne and Frodsham Whittington Chiming Engraved Giant Carriage Clock
A superb twin fusee English striking and Whittington chiming giant carriage clock.
The superb movement with chain driven fusees sounding the hours upon a coiled steel gong with the quarters struck via a brass pin barrell plucking a steel comb. The quarters of Whittington chimes with single run to the first quarter followed up by two for the second quarter and so on, having free sprung English lever platform escapement with engraved cock. The base plate signed "Escapement made by Chas Frodsham 113 New Bond Street London". The finely engraved gilt brass dial with Roman numerals, being signed below VI, "Payne 163 New Bond St", having finely cut blued steel hands of Cole style. The case of engraved and gilt brass showing the work of the finest hand to that of the Cole workshops. The compressed bun feet with gilt moulding above and below the floral engraved base and supporting the gilt and fluted pillars leading to the floral engraved chamfered top, with four plain ball finials and carrying handle spanning the glazed platform viewing window. The side panels of gilt floral engraved brass with repeat push button to the right hand panel and having solid engraved brass back door with central basket of fruits. Study of the case brings new delights from all directions as the character of the engraver is born.
An outstanding piece supplied with a felt lined mahogany travel box.
