An Impressive Red Lacquer Three Train Automaton Bracket Clock by James Smith, London.
The case profusely decorated with red lacquer work incorporating asymmetrical scrolling and vignettes of rural scenes, having a true bell top, five pineapple finials on blocks, carrying handles to the glazed sides and caryatid mounts flanking the arched front door, the whole above a scrolling pediment upon four block feet. The arched dial with applied, silvered brass chapter ring with Roman hour numerals, outer minutes chapter and Arabic five minute divisions, the matted centre with a calendar aperture above VI, countersunk cartouche signed, James Smith London, below XII, scolling spandrels to the corners, finely cut blued steel hands and painted, five action automaton scene in the arch depicting six men at work in a stylised rural landscape. The substantial triple fusee eight day quarter striking movement with verge escapement, knife-edge suspension with brass pendulum rod and bob, the quarters being sounded on a nest of eight bells and the hours on a separate bell, the intrically engraved backplate being signed, James Smith London.
