The lobe shaped case carved from a single piece of heliotrope with a cut radiating design, the hinged front cover with gilt, scalloped edge, loose ring pendant and turned and engraved button and finial, the engraved silver dial with black Roman hour numerals, outer floral design and centre depicting a village scene, having polished gilt brass dial plate with plain edge and gilt fleur de lys hand. The gilt, fusee and chain movement with turned pillars, four wheel train, pre-hairspring verge escapement with plain steel two arm balance, balance cock pierced and engraved with a floral pattern and hog's bristle regulator mounted on an adjustable pivoted lever.
In the early 17th century watches like this were very rare and very few have survived in such good condition as this. Watches from this period are normally cased in silver or, rarer still, rock crystal. It is extremely rare to have a case made from heliotrope.
